The metric system, also know as SI unit, is an internationally used decimal system of measurement. Every country except three use it (United States, Myanmar, and Liberia). The United States uses the Imperial system, which is what you are use to using (inches, feet, yards, gallon, ounces).
The main features of metric system are the standard set of interrelated base units, and a standard set of prefixes in powers of ten. Example, meter is used for length and is 1.
